Live bait rescue is one of the most advanced and effective techniques in swiftwater safety. It involves a rescuer, tethered to a rope, actively swimming to assist a victim in moving water.
At Costa Rica Paddle, we train this technique with a strong emphasis on teamwork, communication, and physical readiness.
How it Works:
- The rescuer wears a rescue PFD with a quick-release harness.
- A belay team stands on the strong shore with a rope system.
- On signal, the rescuer swims out to contact and assist the swimmer.
- The team pulls both back to shore using the tensioned rope.
Why it Matters:
- Reduces rescue time drastically
- Allows contact-based rescue in tight spaces
- Builds confidence in high-stress situations
This method is physically demanding and requires situational awareness, but it’s one of the most rewarding skills we teach. With proper training, it turns potential victims into swiftwater pros.
